More than Wedding Photographers – AMAZING Band Photo Shoot with TUF

We shoot mostly weddings and lifestyle photos and that is what we are known for but we also do a lot of other photo shoots too (advertising, commercial, architecture, fashion, head shots…).  Recently we had the pleasure of photographing press photos for a local band: Trampled Under Foot.  They are an amazing blues band out of Kansas City and have played at Austin City Limits and opened for Jonny Lang.  Their music is amazing!  Check it out here.   ‘Bad Bad Feeling’ is a must hear! The shoot went great and the only thing we missed that day was the heat – it was 30 degrees during our shoot!  You will never know that by looking at the photos though, they were all troopers and the shots came out ‘hot’ even though the weather wasn’t 🙂

Danielle is the lead singer and has a second band called The Danielle Nicole Band.  They are equally as amazing as TUF!  Actually, three quarters of the band is Trampled Under Foot – three of the four band members are the same.  We did another shoot with DNB that was less gritty at Aloft Hotel in Leawood / Overland Park.  The weather was even colder this day but we were shooting inside so the cold didn’t get to us except for the one shot we took outside that happens to be a favorite from the day.

Below are a few shots from both shoots.  Be sure to check out Trampled Under Foot and Danielle Nicole Band!  I went to their concert the night after the shoot and they are incredible to listen to live!  It was standing room only at BBs Lawnside BBQ – check out the iPhone panorama photo below…

New Name and New Addition to our family

Well, it’s been awhile since we last posted to our blog but we are hoping to keep up more often this year.  A lot has changed since our last post… one of those things is our business name. You will see that we are now Kevin Ashley Photography. Since we are a husband and wife team we wanted to show that in our business name. We have updated our logo to show our new name and we have changed our website to www.kevinashleyphotography.com. Don’t worry if you can’t remember that, our old website (www.kevinkeithphotography.com) will automatically take you to our new one.

An EVEN  BIGGER CHANGE that we are super excited about is the addition to our family… we became first time parents to the cutest little girl in the world! We welcomed Keziah Keith into our lives on November 7th. She is growing fast and we couldn’t be happier parents. She loves making us smile and she is so cute and happy all the time (as far as you know haha:) We did a mini photo shoot with Keziah recently and here are some of her pics…

      Michelle and Paul’s Paradise Cove Wedding in Orlando, Florida {Destination Wedding Photographers – Orlando, FL}

It is always fun for us to travel to new places and photograph destination weddings and we had an amazing time photographing Michelle and Paul’s gorgeous wedding and wedding events recently in Orlando, Florida!  We feel so honored to have been such a special part of Michelle and Paul’s wedding day!  Michelle and Paul are an awesome couple full of energy, smiles, and love for each other and life itself!  Both Paul and Michelle work at one of the Disney World Parks in Orlando and we enjoyed hearing all the stories they shared with us about their adventures there!

Their beautiful wedding was held at Paradise Cove.  They say that rain on your wedding day brings brides and grooms good luck and since that is the case, Michelle an Paul are sure to have the best!  🙂  The rain poured down in the early afternoon and was threatening to rain out their outdoor ceremony, but just as we were looking for indoor options for Michelle and Paul’s ‘first-look’ before their ceremony, the rain cleared off and we had a beautifully steamy late afternoon and perfect evening for their ceremony and reception!  Their ceremony was amidst the luscious palm trees and set to the background of a beautiful beach cove!  As a unique treat, Paul and the groomsmen entered the ceremony on a boat that pulled up to the shore where their ceremony took place!  It is always fun to hear and see new things at weddings when we are photographing and one of those unique details at Michelle and Paul’s wedding came when they played ‘Ho Hey’ by The Lumineers as the bridal party began walking.  It was a really cool and different way of incorporating themselves into their ceremony!

After the ceremony, guests enjoyed a tasty buffet and margaritas beach side where they danced the night away! Check out some of our favorite photos from their wedding below!

      Congratulations you two!

Beautiful Models and Studio Lighting | Sandy Puc Hands-On Photography Workshop | Kansas City Photographer

Kevin recently had the opportunity to attend Sandy Puc’s “Hands-On Photography Workshop” at the Holiday Inn in Kansas City.  It was a great evening full of photography industry experts like Sandy Puc, Chuck Arlund, Craig Stidham, and several others.  They were sharing about lighting, posing, and shooting and gave photographers the opportunity for small group instruction with live shooting sessions with models and various lighting set-ups.  There are so many ways to capture amazing shots using different lighting equipment and techniques!  It was a great evening experimenting with different styles!  Here are a few favorite photos from the evening and what lighting set up was used for each…

This was shot with a diffused beauty dish.

This series was shot was with a diffused beauty dish just a couple feet from model to create soft light with deep shadows.

This was shot with a Speedlight a couple of feet away from the model.  Set the camera to the background exposure then adjusted the power of the Speedlight.

This was shot with modeling lights diffused by soft boxes on both sides of the model.  Additional lights on the background.

Shot with strobes diffused by soft boxes on both sides of model.

Creative Marketing Strategies for Photographers | Kansas City SMUG MUG Meeting | Kevin Keith Photography

There are all sorts of awesome resources for photographers in the Kansas City area and one of our favorites is our SMUG group.  We are a group of photographers that meet up monthly for meetings to network and share with other photogs in the area.  It’s named that based on the online photography hosting site, Smug Mug, where photographers can show and share their work with clients online.  While it’s called Kansas City SMUG, not everyone who comes actually uses that site to host images, it’s just a great way to meet with other photogs!

Each meeting has a new speaker and topic that is shared and last night Kevin (Kevin Keith of Kevin Keith Photography :)) spoke to the group about creative ways to effectively market your photography business.  He did an awesome job sharing some great ideas and things to avoid to build up your business!

Here are some highlights from his awesome presentation:

Don’t spend big bucks on print advertising.  Very rarely will you see a return on your investment with this marketing strategy no matter how much advertisers promise it will grow your business!

Write a blog and share your work.  Be consistent in writing blog posts; people need to know there is something to return to when they visit your blog!

Send e-mail newsletters to your clients and contacts you meet.  Be sure to not only share about your business, but also give readers some resources and information they can gain from so they will continue to open and read your newsletters!

Create strong vendor relationships.  What better way to get referrals than from awesome vendors you work with?!!  Send vendors who are a part of your photo session watermarked photos after the session for them to use on their website and to advertise with.  It is a great and easy way to build relationships and grow your word of mouth referrals!

Send hand-written ‘Thank You’ notes to your clients.  Snail mail is not obsolite and means so much more than a quick email!  Taking the time to write ‘Thank You’ notes shows your care and dedication because you took the time to write it by hand and mail it!

Be cautious and smart about doing daily deal sites like Groupon and Living Social!  Don’t give everything away or you will easily get burnt out and have no time for paying clients.  If you decide to use a deal site, be sure you have a plan for being able to up-sell the client after they have purchased the deal and also think about how you are going to schedule everyone.

Only showcase what you want to photograph on your website.

Connect with clients and visitors on your website by having a photo of yourself and a little bio that they can read!  They need to know you are someone they can relate to!

If you don’t ask, it won’t happen.  Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and come up with creative ways to market yourself and vendors at the same time!  For example, Kevin Keith Photography hosted a photography workshop and all of the vendors involved donated their products for them to use in return for photographs of those products that were used during the workshop (location for the workshop and photo shoot, borrowed wedding dresses from a bridal shop for the models to wear, hair and makeup for the models, etc.).  After the workshop each vendor received a beautiful album of photos of their products that they set out in their stores with the photography information included on the album.  A great and inexpensive form of advertising for the vendor and your business!

Here are some of the photos from this awesome meeting!  More great things are to come, so stay tuned!!

PS… Thanks to Kevin Gibson and Tina Kramer for hosting and leading this great group and thanks to White House Custom Color and Smug Mug for all the great giveaways that we are able to give out every meeting!  We sure are lucky to have such awesome things to go with an awesome photo get-together!
